(Massimo Tirocchi)
Massimo Tirocchi was born in 1970. He works fishes and lives in a beautiful Italian region called Abruzzi.
He has been working with wood since an early age and has been fly fishing for 23 years. In the beginning of 2000, he built his first bamboo rod and from then he has been in love with this wonderful passion. Massimo Tirocchi is also a member of the Italian Bamboo Rodmakers Association.
Moreover, as an artist in spirit, he also likes to incorporate his ideas into his creations.
Here is his philosophy:
"Each Bamboo culm is unique. That means to me that each Bamboo culm has his soul. Making bamboo rods what I do is to free that soul from the superfluous material. It's a way to work inspired by sculpture art, the one that proceeds "by way of removing". Each single step is hand-made, without haste, without machines that, with cold and asectic execution, rape the culm's soul. The result is fly fishing rods that are unique as hand-made suits tailored to you".
Massimo tells us that "...each one of the rods is created in order to manage the trade-off between the followings aspects:
• total weight of the rod and its distribution;
• rod action;
• balance point of the rod"
Massimo carefully design his own taper according to his specifications and taste which is tip action rods with progressive action, a typical combination excellent for the TLT casting method developed by Roberto Pragliola.
Rod making By Passion – Living the Bamboo New Age
“Many times, speaking with Fly Fishermen, I realize that they still consider bamboo rods just like wonderful objects of the past. This idea is probably due to the new fly fishing approach that needs rod with features very difficult to find in the “classic” bamboo rods. I think in example to the lightness, to the progressive action and to the durability of rod. T-Rods design approach has been inspired by these requirements, and with the support of International Casting Masters we develop our own tapers with the goal of carry out Bamboo rods that are not only aesthetically admirable objects, but effective and modern fly fishing tools. This approach allows us to offer to the exacting Fly Fishermen, rods able to join modern features to the historical bamboo verve. The result is fly fishing rods that are unique as hand-made suits tailored to you”.
Taper Design – Managing a trade off
The rod tapers are created in order to manage the trade-off between the followings aspects:
• Total weight of the rod and its distribution
• Rod action
• Balance point of the rod
Each single step is hand-made, without haste, without machines that, with cold and ascetic execution, rape the culm’s soul. We use only high quality Bamboo Arundinaria Amabilis (Pseudosasa amabilis) and first quality components (Bellinger reel seats, CSE ferrules, Snake Brand snake guides and agates, cork and silk). Each rod is hollow build and it can be shipped with one or two tips (twin tips). We offer tapers from 6’ to 7’6’’ in two or three pieces for lines #2, 3, and 4(WF and DT).

Note from the Editor - BUYER BEWARE! Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations…
Recently, an unsolicited e-mail raised concerns about the quality and workmanship of some of the bamboo rods being sold to unsuspecting fly fishermen. The company of origin asked us to purchase their bamboo rods at an UNBELIEVABLY low price – between $60 and $80 each! We, along with dozens of other bamboo makers, know that between 40 and 70 hours are expended on each HAND-CRAFTED bamboo rod. There is no way these rods could be of the same craftsmanship or quality. When compared to any reputable rodmaker’s work, these rods are junk. (Visible glue lines, poor quality adhesives, bad finishes, inferior components, etc.) We know the companies offering these rods, and you’ve probably seen them priced between $300 and $1000 each. Now you know how much they cost originally! We have also heard many reports from anglers not doing their due dilegence and choosing the cheaper rods only to have them break from poor quality craftsmanship and discover they bought a cheap, fake piece of junk.
Make sure you investigate the bamboo rodmaker of your choice by asking for a few references and how long they have been making rods and do they belong to any rodmaking associations etc...it will only save you money in the long run by having a quality bamboo rod that will stand the test of fish and time.
Bamboo rods have been the backbone of flyfishing for one hundred and fifty years… help us maintain this tradition and heritage by supporting the true craftsmen and their work.
