Ice Climbing Is One Of Michigan’s Greatest Winter Wonders

By Bryon Thelen

As winter comes to an end and spring slowly melts the winter freeze. I was fortunate enough to get to experience one of Michigan's greatest wonders “Ice Climbing”.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is one of the greatest ice climbing meccas in the mid west. During my recent trip to Munising Michigan, I was able to still find some good ice to climb towards the end of winter. This was my first attempt at ice climbing and I can say I will definitely be back next winter. I had never rappelled, ice climbed or winter camped before.

As we headed out at 4:00 am on March 12, 2010 we were excited and anxious to get to Munising, MI. As we got closer we were worried that the ice conditions may have deteriorated due to the extraordinarily warm March weather we have had this year. As we reached our destination at Sand Point we stopped and got our back country camping permits and load our packs with our gear. After a 2 mile trek we reached camp and found a good spot to set up. As we climbed in to our sleeping bags that night our anticipation grew. We thought of the ice formations that we had seen on the way in. Morning couldn't come soon enough.

(Saturday morning at camp)

Finally, Saturday morning was here. We arranged all the gear we would need and set out to find some good ice to climb. We hiked along the top of the Sand Stone cliffs that parallel along Sand Point road.  Finally we reached a spot that looked good to climb, but we needed to view it from the base of the cliff. We set up a repel and lowered our self off the 70' cliff to the base. Unfortunately this was a spot known as the amphitheater which had already melted to a point were we didn't feel it was safe to climb (The Amphitheater is formed buy a frozen waterfall). So we continued down the cliffs in search of good ice to climb.

(Me Repelling down the “Amphitheater”)

(The Amphitheater)

Finally we found a good section of ice to the right of what is known as “The Curtains”.  This wasn't as tall as some frozen waterfalls we had found but it was tall enough for our level of ice climbing experience. This was a section about 20-25' tall and we had it all to our selves. After setting up we had a great day of climbing. The ice was a bit soft and we found our Ice Axes would sink in easily and give us a secure anchor. We also discovered that our crampons (that are designed for Mountaineering) worked well for us on vertical ice too. I can hardly wait to head back next year to climb some of the frozen water falls we had seen.

(Climbing the “Curtains”  - 2 photos)

If you think Ice climbing is something you would like to try, then you should head to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Every February Munising host an event called “Ice Fest”. Here you can rent gear needed to climb and even get some training and tips on proper technique. If ice climbing isn't for you there is plenty of nature’s beauty to see. Getting out may just help ward off the “Cabin Fever” of winter.

(A view behind the “Curtains”)

You are probably asking “How do you get into ice climbing?” Well I have set some personal goals in life and hope to climb the 7 summits of the world and ice climbing was the next step to develop some technical skills that will be needed to reach my goal.

If you are not familiar with the 7 summit, they are the tallest points of all seven continents. I started preparing and developing the skills needed to archive this goal last year, and so far, I have completed several summits in the Oregon cascades...but this story was intended to discuss Mountaineering, but to inform others about the "Ice Wonders" we are blessed with here in Michigan.

Note from the editor:  Thank you so much for your awesome photos and story Bryon...I especially favor the photo titled "Behind the Curtains"....what a great photo!!!!

Early Spring Crappie Fishing Tips

(She's So Fly Crappie Fishing the Channel of Hess Lake, Newaygo Mi)

Note from the editor:  Spring is a great and exciting time to fish for Crappie.  They just arrived in the channel of Hess Lake, Newaygo Mi and it was fun to fish outside my front door.  Many anglers came today in search of Crappie and most caught an average of 50 fish for the day each.  This is a great time to teach a small child how to fish.  I have a cottage for rent called the Hess Lake Charmer that has reasonable rates just for that reason...check it out on http://www.hesslakerentals.com/

Early Spring Crappie Fishing Tips

By Stephen Long

It has been a long hard winter and one of the most anticipated events in the spring is wetting a line on open water. While ice fishing is fun and productive, there is nothing like being out in the boat after taking a few months off. What really adds to the open water fishing experience is the thrill of catching slab crappies.

There are many fishermen who wait in the spring for the crappies to move in to spawn. Don't get me wrong; if you find crappies on their spawning beds, the fishing can be fantastic! But why wait to the spawn when you can have your cake and eat it too. Crappie fishing right after ice out can be equally rewarding.

The water temperature right after ice out will be very frigid. After a few bright warm sunny days the lakes ecosystem will start to come alive. Many crappies in the early spring will be found deep. These deep water spots typically will be the last spots the ice fisherman were having success. By using light jigs and minnows in these deep-water spots, chances are you will have good success. But if you are really looking for fast action think shallow water.

As the water starts warming up, the insects will start hatching and small baitfish will move closer to shore. When that happens the crappies will move in right behind the food to feed. The best thing about early season crappie fishing is that the best times of the day to be out is during the peak of late afternoon and early evening when the weather is the nicest. Every lake is different, but the best early season lakes are the more shallow and muddy bottom lakes because they tend to warm up quicker.

If the lake has a small bay or channel the crappies will be drawn in there like magnets. Fallen trees, sticks brush and last years weeds will attract more insects that are hatching that the crappies will feed upon. This combination will become your "A" fishing spot. The water temp that typically starts this early season action is about 50 degrees. There are many fishermen who incorrectly think the crappies at this time are coming in to spawn. They are simply coming in to feed at this time. Crappies will move in to spawn a little later in the spring when the water temperature is about 65 degrees.

There are many fishermen that will use a jig and minnow. They will catch fish, but if you really want the fast action switch your presentation to a tube jig. The best depths typically here are about 6 feet or less. When you rig you tube jig, place a small bobber a foot and a half up from the jig. Cast and retrieve it slow. The bobber basically simply keeps your jig at the same depth. In detecting the bite, crappies will often grab your jig and swim side to side or the bobber will tip up and then move slowly down. The tube jig body is plastic so give the crappie a little time to suck it down. The best thing about the tube jig is that if you miss you will often get another bite right away. When using minnows for bait, you miss your done.

Once the crappies move in, the action can get very fast. This spring crappie pattern usually lasts a few weeks. After that the crappies move slightly deeper staging for the spawn and then move back in. So why wait for the crappies to spawn? You waited all winter. Early spring crappie fishing is a real bonus. Have Fun!

“Fish and Stay” on the Ice of Lake Of The Woods in Minnesota

Three buddies and I booked a trip to Lyon Sleepers, which is located at Lake of the Woods, MN. I have never taken an ice fishing trip like this at all and it seemed very interesting to me to say the least…72 hours of living on an ice covered lake and fishing. My buddies and I are hard core fisherman and we made it work well for us. We caught 202 saugers, 40 walleyes, 2 northern and 2 perch.

This lake is well known for its big walleyes and great sauger population. In MN, ( Lake of the Woods) you are only allowed to catch 4 walleyes a day and 4 saugers a day per person. We kept 20 to 25 fish a day to make our meal every night. These fish are not real big, but they do taste great.

The average size for the saugers were 9" to 13" and the walleyes were 12" to 16", so we kept the little ones for eaters. The slot size for walleyes is 19.5" to 28" and you can only keep one walleye over 28". Our biggest walleye was 22" and about 3 lbs. We had about 6 eyes in the 17" range and the rest were smaller. Tim, the owner had our ice shack over 25' FOW with a soft bottom.

The ice shacks are 10' wide and 20' long and are heated with propane. There were four bunk beds with a small stove for cooking, and this was ideal for what we were doing, a great setup and was a lot of fun.

(ice shack we stayed in on our trip)

(interior of the ice shack)

Ok now for the technical part of catching all these fish. YOU MUST HAVE A FLASHER OR SOME TYPE OF LOCATOR!!!!!!! These fish were tight to bottom and if you marked them, you would have to tease them. Twitch your jigging spoon, get there attention and start to lift your spoon off the bottom about a foot, and then they would slam it big time. Morning and late day worked the best for us. We were all using some type of jig that had some orange and gold to it and they were 1/8 oz to 3/16 oz, tip with only the head of the minnow. We did try with whole minnows, but did not fair well in that method.

I believe, if you are a hard core fisherman like us, this is the place to go. Here is Tim's web site, http://www.lyonsleepers.com/overview.html.  Check him out and I would highly recommend his guide service.

Hope you have enjoyed my story and some pics of our trip.

T-Rods – Hand Planed Bamboo Rods by Massimo Tirocchi - Sponsor of Fishing For A Cause

We are very excited to report to all you anglers that "T-Rods – Hand Planed Bamboo Rods by Massimo Tirocchi" has graciously agreed to become a sponsor of  the National Campaign called "Fishing For A Cause" which will benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc

He will be show casing a special "Fishing For A Cause" Bamboo Rod in which we will feature and anglers will be able to purchase in the near future.

(Massimo Tirocchi)

Massimo Tirocchi was born in 1970. He works fishes and lives in a beautiful Italian region called Abruzzi.

He has been working with wood since an early age and has been fly fishing for 23 years. In the beginning of 2000, he built his first bamboo rod and from then he has been in love with this wonderful passion. Massimo Tirocchi is also a member of the Italian Bamboo Rodmakers Association.

Moreover, as an artist in spirit, he also likes to incorporate his ideas into his creations.

Here is his philosophy:

"Each Bamboo culm is unique. That means to me that each Bamboo culm has his soul. Making bamboo rods what I do is to free that soul from the superfluous material. It's a way to work inspired by sculpture art, the one that proceeds "by way of removing". Each single step is hand-made, without haste, without machines that, with cold and asectic execution, rape the culm's soul. The result is fly fishing rods that are unique as hand-made suits tailored to you".

Massimo tells us that "...each one of the rods is created in order to manage the trade-off between the followings aspects:

• total weight of the rod and its distribution;
• rod action;
• balance point of the rod"

Massimo carefully design his own taper according to his specifications and taste which is tip action rods with progressive action, a typical combination excellent for the TLT casting method developed by Roberto Pragliola.

Rod making By Passion – Living the Bamboo New Age

“Many times, speaking with Fly Fishermen, I realize that they still consider bamboo rods just like wonderful objects of the past. This idea is probably due to the new fly fishing approach that needs rod with features very difficult to find in the “classic” bamboo rods. I think in example to the lightness, to the progressive action and to the durability of rod. T-Rods design approach has been inspired by these requirements, and with the support of International Casting Masters we develop our own tapers with the goal of carry out Bamboo rods that are not only aesthetically admirable objects, but effective and modern fly fishing tools. This approach allows us to offer to the exacting Fly Fishermen, rods able to join modern features to the historical bamboo verve. The result is fly fishing rods that are unique as hand-made suits tailored to you”.

Taper Design – Managing a trade off

The rod tapers are created in order to manage the trade-off between the followings aspects:

• Total weight of the rod and its distribution
• Rod action
• Balance point of the rod

Each single step is hand-made, without haste, without machines that, with cold and ascetic execution, rape the culm’s soul. We use only high quality Bamboo Arundinaria Amabilis (Pseudosasa amabilis) and first quality components (Bellinger reel seats, CSE ferrules, Snake Brand snake guides and agates, cork and silk). Each rod is hollow build and it can be shipped with one or two tips (twin tips). We offer tapers from 6’ to 7’6’’ in two or three pieces for lines #2, 3, and 4(WF and DT).

Loop Tracks – Fast Action

Our choice is to develop the Taper model, leaving to the customer the chance to choice all the components. You have two options: buy the blank or buy the complete rod. The Loop tracks Taper has the followings features:

- Length: 7’0’’
- Pieces: 2 (same length)
- Tip: 1 or 2
- Line weight: dt #3
- Weight blank: 56 gr.

This Taper has been designed for the lovers of fast action rod. A good tip action joined to a nice progressive action allow you to make gentle presentations up close or, when the need arises, to cast long distances

Sanobrite – Light and Power

Our choice is to develop the Taper model, leaving to the customer the chance to choice all the components. You have two options: buy the blank or buy the complete rod. The Sangro Bite Taper has the followings features:

- Length: 6’8’’
- Pieces: 2 (same length)
- Tip: 1 or 2
- Line weight: dt #2 or #3
- Weight blank: 52 gr.

Extraordinarily lightweight rod that combine the powerful, highly responsive characteristics with the smoothness and delicacy of the more traditional - action rods. We fully recognize that many people enjoy fishing for trout with medium fast-action rods

Indica – The Control

Our choice is to develop the Taper model, leaving to the customer the chance to choice all the components. You have two options: buy the blank or buy the complete rod. We offer the Indica 2 options Taper with the followings features:

- Option 1
- Length: 6’3’’
- Pieces: 2 (different length)

- Tip: 1 or 2
- Line weight: dt #3 or #4
- Weight blank: 48 gr. - Option 2
- Lunghezza: 7’2’’
- Pieces: 2 (same length)

- Tip: 1 or 2
- Line weight: dt #2 or #3
- Weight blank: 56 gr.

They have a wonderful medium action and feature incredible touch and feel, plus superb line and loop control.

Option 1: 3 and 4-weight rods that will make short, delicate, accurate casts on small streams and spring creeks

Option 2: 2 and 3-weight rods with the power to make longer casts. Perfect for almost all trout fishing situations.

Note from the Editor - BUYER BEWARE!  Don’t be fooled by cheap imitations…

Recently, an unsolicited e-mail raised concerns about the quality and workmanship of some of the bamboo rods being sold to unsuspecting fly fishermen. The company of origin asked us to purchase their bamboo rods at an UNBELIEVABLY low price – between $60 and $80 each!  We, along with dozens of other bamboo makers, know that between 40 and 70 hours are expended on each HAND-CRAFTED bamboo rod. There is no way these rods could be of the same craftsmanship or quality. When compared to any reputable rodmaker’s work, these rods are junk. (Visible glue lines, poor quality adhesives, bad finishes, inferior components, etc.) We know the companies offering these rods, and you’ve probably seen them priced between $300 and $1000 each. Now you know how much they cost originally!   We have also heard many reports from anglers not doing their due dilegence and choosing the cheaper rods only to have them break from poor quality craftsmanship and discover they bought a cheap, fake piece of junk.

Make sure you investigate the bamboo rodmaker of your choice by asking for a few references and how long they have been making rods and do they belong to any rodmaking associations etc...it will only save you money in the long run by having a quality bamboo rod that will stand the test of fish and time.

Bamboo rods have been the backbone of flyfishing for one hundred and fifty years… help us maintain this tradition and heritage by supporting the true craftsmen and their work.

Muskie Train Enterprises - Sponsor of Fishing For A Cause with She's So Fly

Hi Everyone, I discovered this article about Muskie Train Enterprises on http://virginiamusky.com/.  As you know, Muskie Train Enterprises is one of my "Fishing For A Cause" partners and sponsers and you can see their custom painted lures for this cause by video on the "home page".  This article and video explains what type of lures they offer and how they make them.

March 3, 2010 - Tackle Review

We caught up with Muskie Train at the 2010 Ohio Muskie Expo.

All lures are hand crafted from cedar wood. The bodies are turned on the lathe, sealed and painted. Once the paint has cured an epoxy coating is applied to give the lure body a tough, durable finish. The screw eyes and diving lip are then installed. You will notice on my baits the oversized screw eyes. These eyes are 1 7/16″ long to ensure a strong anchor into the bait. The larger eye allows for increased movement, which allows the lure to have a greater range of movement. Once the hooks and split rings have been attached to the lure, each one is hand tested.

All three styles of lures can be seen below. The color chart chart shows only the Mordas Minnow, but the colors are applicable to the larger baits. Custom colors are available upon request. Please use the link provided to contact us for special colors.

Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament -- “Twentieth Anniversary”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mothers, daughters, sisters and friends supporting and inspiring each other...

The Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce presents the Twentieth Anniversary Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament, May 7th & 8th – twenty-years of mothers, daughters, sisters and friends supporting and inspiring each other. Every year on Mother’s Day weekend, two-hundred women and fifty boats take to the Boca Grande Pass that runs south of Gasparilla Island, Florida, the tarpon fishing capital of the world. The tournament is an island tradition for this quaint and historic community.

It all started twenty-years ago when a group of Boca Grande women got together and decided to have a tarpon tournament. There were three criteria: it had to be all women, it had to be all release and it had to be all fun. Those three requirements were what made that tournament unique. You see, the year was 1990 and tarpon tournaments were mostly all men, usually involved a dead tarpon or two hanging on a dock and the anglers took this business of tarpon fishing very very seriously.

Fast-forward twenty-years, Boca Grande Pass, 2010: Grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters, sisters, aunts and friends -- multigenerational teams are now competing in what has become a pre Mother’s Day island tradition. This is the “unofficial” kickoff of the world famous tarpon season in Boca Grande, and those grandmothers fishing out there in the Boca Grande Pass are the ones that started it all.

Twenty-years ago, dragging a prize tarpon several miles to the dock and hanging it for all to see were the norm. This was not acceptable for the women who founded the Boca Grande Ladies Day Tournament. In fact, even the ritual of weighing and releasing a tarpon on site (still a common practice in some tournaments) was considered too stressful on such a beautiful creature. Today, that philosophy of “do no harm” has become a movement among the local tarpon fishermen.

“Last year’s tournament was the biggest ever, and we know our ladies will love what we are doing this year”, said Larissa Wells. Larissa is the Assistant Manager at the Englewood Bank in Boca Grande and is the chairperson of the Ladies Day Committee. “This year’s tournament includes the traditions of years past and adds a few new surprises that the committee members hope will become traditions of the future.”

The theme of the tournament is inspired by the original poster of twenty-years ago created by local artist JoJo Faulstich titled “Hook ‘em, Ride ‘em & Release ‘em”. “We had several talented artists submit their work to be considered for this year’s theme, but it was the original poster of twenty-years ago that we were drawn to -- It was an obvious choice – JoJo’s work is timeless – it’s just beautiful”, said Lynda Lancaster, Executive Director of the Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce. A fine art giclee’ of JoJo’s original piece will be auctioned at the tournament.

For more information on the tournament and how to purchase items depicting Jo Jo Faulstich’s beautiful artwork, contact: Lynda Lancaster, Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce, 941-964-0568, info@bocagrandechamber.com or go to http://www.bocagrandechamber.com/.

An Update For You On Asian Carp

Your efforts are helping Michigan in the battle to keep Asian carp in Chicago and out of the Great Lakes. While our court case before the U.S. Supreme Court continues, did you know that President Obama could simply make a choice today to close the locks, at least until we are satisfied there is a plan that will protect our lakes and our jobs? We need him to hear our voices loud and clear.

One way you have done that is by attending one of the three Asian carp forums we have held around Michigan. In Traverse City, I joined Cong. Dave Camp and several environmental and economic experts to talk with nearly 200 area residents and help them become activists on this vital issue. I was then joined by Cong. Vern Ehlers in Grand Rapids and Cong. Fred Upton in St. Joseph. You can see some of the stories below. Other meetings are being planned, so we hope to see you soon.

Chicago's O'Brien Lock: The Asian Carp's Gateway into the Great Lakes

Another Way For You To Help Stop Asian Carp

Another way you can help us put pressure on President Obama and Illinois authorities is to write a letter to your area newspaper to make your voice heard. If all of us speak up on behalf of the Great Lakes, we can make a real impact. It is our responsibility to be good stewards of the Great Lakes, to ensure that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the Great Lakes as well.

Below you will find a list of links to many newspapers around Michigan. Please take a few minutes to send a letter explaining that you support our efforts to force Illinois to close the Chicago locks and produce a plan that will truly protect the Great Lakes. Copy us on your e-mail if you are able at info@stopasiancarp.com.

Thank You For Your Efforts

While we wait for action by the Supreme Court, your efforts in the court of public opinion will make a difference. Thank you for your help, and I hope to see you at a future Asian carp town hall meeting.

Sincerely,

Mike Cox

She's So Fly Tries Spey Casting

I had my first Spey casting lesson on the White river in Hesperia, Michigan, with river guide Jed Litwiller, owner of Pere Marquette River Guide Service. It was slightly different from single handed fly fishing, but once I got used to casting with a longer rod, I really enjoyed this type of fishing.

Spey casting is a casting technique used in fly fishing. Spey casting requires a longer, heavier two-handed fly rod, referred to as a Spey rod.

The Spey cast is a graceful, flowing and dynamic cast that allows the fly fisher to harness unprecedented advantages in angling. These advantages include line control, distance casting, and access to un-fishable lies. Once proficient with the Spey cast, many steelhead and salmon anglers choose to fish the "two-hander" exclusively and there is a growing interest in using light-weight Spey outfits for trout and other light game fish.

(Spey Casting Techniques shown in this video)

There are basically three types of Spey casts (Single Spey; Double Spey and Snake Roll). The choice of which to use is dictated solely by the direction of the wind in relation to the direction of river flow and is to do with safety. In all cases, the preparatory phase of the cast is set up downwind of the angler, so that when the delivery stroke is made, any sudden gust will always blow the hook away from the angler.

Downstream wind - use a Double Spey or Snake Roll cast.

Upstream wind - use a Single Spey cast

Sage Spey Rods: Always on the forefront of fly rod design, Sage has three Spey Rod Series; from the medium fast action, affordable VT 2, to the fast-action Z-Axis Spey and Switch Rods, to the new, very exciting TCX ultra-fast two-handed rod series.

Thomas & Thomas Spey Rods: The workhorse of two-handed rods, T&T rods combine a crisp commanding action with a design that meets the needs of all casting styles, both traditional and modern.

Winston Spey Rods: As with every rod Winston designs, their uncompromising attention to function is highlighted in their two-handed Boron IIx series. These rods were born to cover lots of water and make precise mends when in pursuit of salmon and steelhead.
