“Sheboygan Harbor Virgin Ice Anglers" Catch A Huge Brown Trout

The sun was out and the wind was at 20 to 25 mph in Sheboygan, WI, and the “Sheboygan Harbor Virgin Ice Anglers" (Steve, Bob and myself - Coot) set out to hit the hard water at 10:00 am.

We looked around and saw about a dozen anglers out there. We set up some tip ups and started to jig with Swedish pimples, with whole minnow and or a half a minnow on the treble hook. We witnessed a couple fish being caught, then all of a sudden, Steve yells out "I've got one"!

Then the battle started over at our ice hole.  Steve was very excited as Bob and I were too. Steve told us that he had only 4 lb test line on.  The fish was swimming around in circles and we were afraid that the line could be cut by the edge of the hole, so I told Steve to stick the pole down the hole and play the fish that way and he did.  About 10 minutes later I reached into the hole and pulled the nice big brown trout out of the hole and lots of “OMG” were coming out our mouths.

We left with a 30" long and 12 lb brown trout and a lot of memories during this ice fishing day for us “Sheboygan Harbor Virgin Ice Anglers".

Tight Lines,

Steve Schrage, Bob Kossel and COOT - photo guy

Random Acts of Kindness Week - 2010: February 15-21

Random Acts of Kindness Week
2010: February 15-21

Making a Difference in the Lives of Others

By Mark Cook

In today's world, with all of the negativity and disdain, I have found that little random acts of kindness can make a world of difference. When we decide that we want to make a change in the world in which we live, we need to start with our own lives, and our own family. One way to start making change is to begin practicing random acts of kindness toward others.

There are so many ways to start, and even the smallest of acts can help make a difference in someone's life. Here a just a few ways that we can all make a difference:

Volunteer your time or donate your money to a cause that touches your heart. Take a child fishing.  Read to an elderly patient or buy new books for a veterans' home. Work at a soup kitchen or send a gift of food. No matter how big or small, your contribution will positively affect many people.

Embrace nature and beautify the world for others. To lift people's spirit, keep your garden bright, or plant and maintain flowers in a public area. Plant and donate a tree in somebody's name in your local park.

Your energy affects others so choose to be a beacon of light. Project goodness, happiness, and peace outward through your home, neighborhood, country, and, finally the world. The effects are felt for thousands of miles.

Smile and the world smiles with you. When you catch a stranger's eye, flash a bright smile, even if you aren't feeling quite that happy. Your stranger may be confused, but their day (and yours) will be brighter.

Animals feel a lack of love as acutely as humans. Adopt a pet from your local shelter rather than purchasing one from a pet store. If your life can't include a pet, spend an afternoon volunteering at the animal shelter giving the animals some much-needed love.

Help improve someone's self-esteem or simply show them you care. Give a compliment, send a friendly letter, or tell someone you were thinking about them.

Note from the Editor: As people from different cultures and from all walks of life are joining to spread kindness, they are creating a powerful, synergistic action throughout the world. Please join us in bringing kindness and compassion to our local and global communities!

Help make a difference in the lives of others.

Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens)

Life History & Michigan History

It has been called a relic from the age of dinosaurs. A member of the cartilagenous (non-bony) fishes, the lake sturgeon can indeed be considered the elder statesman of Michigan's fish species. It is difficult to confuse the lake sturgeon with any other Michigan species. The sturgeon has no scales but is covered with five rows of bone like plates on its back, sides, and stomach.

Sturgeon are the longest lived of Michigan's fish species and can attain ages of up to 100 years old. They can grow to over 8 feet in length and weigh up to 800 pounds. Male lake sturgeon reach sexual readiness at 15-20 years of age, and then spawn only every other year. Once females mature at about 20-25 years of age, they spawn on average every four years. These characteristics have prevented the recovery of the lake sturgeon, which has been designated as a threatened species.

Sturgeon prefer large shallow lakes and rivers and the Great Lakes shorelines. They feed by using their protruding mouth to suction up bottom dwelling organisms like crayfish and other crustaceans as well as insect larvae.

Sturgeon have a low reproductive rate and may not begin to spawn until they are 15 to 25 years old. For unknown reasons after entering the spawning stream, sturgeon can be seen porpoising (jumping in the air). It must be impressive to see a 200 to 300 pound fish doing a belly flop!

The lake sturgeon was once located throughout the Great Lakes system, but over harvest by European settlers, destruction of food sources, lampreys and dam construction on spawning rivers have all had an impact on their survival. They are currently listed as a state threatened species. Within the United States, Michigan and Wisconsin hold the last major populations of these fish.

The population of lake sturgeon appears to be stable. Conservation of this ancient species will be dependent on strict control of harvests, protection of spawning rivers and fish during spawning periods. Because of the sturgeons restricted numbers and behavior, few people will ever have the opportunity to see a sturgeon, but sometimes just knowing that species like this still exists is reason enough to be concerned about its future.

Sturgeon Patrol

Each year, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources joins forces with local citizens in Cheboygan County to protect spawning lake sturgeon in the upper Black River. This section of the Black River has long been a problem spot for the illegal taking of lake sturgeon during spring spawning. But with the help of `Sturgeon Watch' volunteers, key areas can be monitored 24 hours a day.

Each spring lake sturgeon come to spawn in the clean, upstream riffles of the upper Black River. In these shallow waters, they are very vulnerable to illegal harvest. During April and May the Black River is closed to fishing between Kleber Dam and Red Bridge.

Local citizens, volunteers from the Michigan National Guard, and members of the local chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow use cell phones to report suspicious activity to the DNR Report All Poaching hotline. The information is then immediately forwarded to conservation officers patrolling the area.

In the past, rewards of up to $1,000 have been offered by Sturgeon for Tomorrow and the RAP program for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons illegally taking lake sturgeon.

Sturgeon Angling Information

A new version of the sturgeon tag has been developed which will be available on January 4, 2010. NOTE: The tag is required for the Black Lake season and anglers who have the earlier version of this tag do not need to get another tag to participate in the February season. All 2009 sturgeon tags will be honored. The lake sturgeon tag is non-transferable and must be obtained at a license vendor prior to all lake sturgeon fishing, including catch-and-immediate-release and the Black Lake season in February. There is no cost for the lake sturgeon tag and the tag is not a substitute for a fishing license. All anglers must have at least a valid restricted fishing license to use the lake sturgeon tag and anglers need to possess this tag when targeting lake sturgeon. Tags are valid for one angling season and expire on March 31, 2010. On waters where harvest of lake sturgeon is allowed as specifically identified below, an angler shall not harvest more than one (1) lake sturgeon per year. Lake sturgeon fishing season information can be found on page 11 (Table 4 Lake Sturgeon) of the Fishing Guide.  Read more....

How Bad Can It Be Really? - Say NO To Negative Thinking

By Sherri Russell

I am a very social person, in fact, an extravert at heart. I speak to a lot of people through social events, charity events, professional groups, work, neighbors, family, internet social sites, etc. Often I am listening to stories about who so and so are dating or having an affair, or someone said something incorrect about the other, who’s lawn is better, who has a better house or vehicle, who might look funny or wear odd clothes, who should or shouldn’t join a club because others they might not fit in with the group, how stressed a friend may be because she spent all week searching for the right type of curtains for her house, an unhappy marriage or career, lack of dating opportunities, and so on. I often wonder why so many people seem to be so miserable over trivial things. At least they seem trivial to me....and why such negativity among such great people?

I think that a person can’t be happy in life until they find happiness within themselves. Happiness is what you make of it.

There is always someone who is worse off than the other. I mean how bad can most situations be? As bad as a sprained pinky finger? Meaning it might hurt for a short time and then be fine. As bad as a broken pinky finger? Meaning it might hurt for a longer amount of time, but be fine later. As bad as an amputated pinky finger? Meaning it might hurt real bad for a while, leaving a permanent mark, but learn to adapt with out it with time.

My point being is that when you can compare matters in a simple perspective such as a pinky finger injury scale, some matters may not seem so bad after all and we then choose not to dwell on them for very long and put them behind us, and focus on more greater and important or positive matters instead.

I have been through a lot of horrible and great experiences in my life of 44 years and each one has contributed some what to who I am as a person today – because of how I chose to deal with each matter at that time.

I believe that life is short and we need to be true to ourselves, treat others as we would like to be treated, think positive and not be selfish.

In fact, I am typing this article in my truck while my son and his friends are down hill skiing. I injured my leg yesterday while walking for miles to thick snow to interview and take photos of ice angler contestants who caught fish. There were over 1,200 contest participants to give you an idea of the size of the contest in Newaygo Michigan this past weekend, called the Dam To Dam Ice Fishing Contest.  The proceeds were to benefit the Big Brothers and Sisters organization.

After returning home from the event, my son discovered that I was injured, he was worried that he and his friends would not be able to ski now if I could not ski too. I told him that it was not his fault that I could not ski and I wasn’t going to take his opportunity away from him as well. So, I have been patiently waiting for the kids to finish for the last four hours thus far. My point being that life does not surround only around me and I need to be aware of others needs and pre-planned expectations such as this ski trip.

So, the next time you seem to be in a horrible situation, stop thinking negative, and try to compare it to a simple pinky finger injury scale and you may be surprised and see your situation in a whole different light.

Dam To Dam Ice Fishing Contest Held To Raise Money For Big Brothers And Big Sisters Organization

Ice Fishing Contestants out on Muskegon River - Croton-Hardy Dams Backwaters

It was a great weekend in Croton. The 4th Annual Dam-to-Dam Ice Fishing Contest, a fund raising event to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County, officially kicked off Friday evening, February 12th, 2010.

This contest is an annual event to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Newaygo County.  Held on ‘Michigan's DNR Free Fishing Weekend’  (No Fishing License Required) in February of each year.

And what better way to kick off a dam-to-dam event than with a "Dam She's Hot" contest.  Which my "friends" talked me into entering....geesh, I could be the contest entries mother...needless to say, I was a good sport about it and placed 4th out of 20 beautiful younger contestants...lol.  Take a look at my embarrassing video of the contest below.

Federal Response to Carp Crisis is not Enough

As you may have heard, this week the Obama administration released a list of 25 proposals they may undertake to battle Asian carp. However, the ONE thing they could have done to STOP the threat, closing the Chicago locks, was not on the list. In fact, they actually proposed several scenarios in which the locks would be left open several days per week. That would be like keeping criminals in jail four days a week and hoping the other three days go OK. If you care about the Great Lakes and the jobs connected to them, it just doesn't make sense.

The bottom line is that their proposals completely lack a sense of urgency. That is why Michigan has been joined by New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Pennsylvania in our fight before the Supreme Court to close the Chicago locks and find a long-term solution.

Thank You for Calling the White House!

I want to personally thank you for calling the White House this week to let them know your views on the Asian carp issue. While I understand many of you were turned away by White House operators, please know that your efforts do make a difference.

Share with a Friend!

If you think your friends have not signed up at StopAsianCarp.com, please forward this message to them so they can stay up-to-date.

I look forward to seeing you this coming week.

Sincerely,

Mike Cox

Michigan Attorney General

Valentine's Day: Commercial hype or romantic opportunity?

by Manda Sanko

Valentine's Day is probably one of the most over-emphasized holidays when it comes to Hallmark, the media, and even those around us, but it is also one of the most romantic holidays too. Most people at one point in their life have muttered "I hate Valentine's Day," either because a significant other does not choose to celebrate it, or there is no significant other to speak of. Others have even come out with the "Valentine's Day is just another holiday created by Hallmark to make money" comment as well. In reality, this is far from the truth.

The history of Valentine's Day can actually be traced all the way back to 270 A.D. It was at this time that Valentine, a bishop, was marrying young couples secretly since the Roman Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage. When the Emperor found out about this he had Valentine arrest. While he was in jail awaiting execution, he miraculously restored the sight of his jailer's daughter and wrote her a farewell letter signed "From Your Valentine." As a result, Valentine became a Saint and an overseer of an annual festival in which young men would offer young women greetings of affection, on February 14th. This romantic holiday has been around for many years, and definitely was no invented by Hallmark, though they did take advantage of it.

No one should need or wait for one specific day to show loved ones how much they are appreciated and cared for, but it is nice to have one day to give and receive such feelings of affection. No one has designated this the day of spending. There is no need to go out and by expensive jewelry, fancy gadgets, flowers, chocolates, cards, etc. unless you actually want to. No one is dragging you by your hair into the stores to purchase something; rather you do so if you choose. This day is not about who gets the best gift or the biggest surprise, it is about being with loved ones and letting them know just how loved they are. Sure, things have gotten a little out of hand and the day has turned into a bit of a commercial hype, but it is definitely still a romantic opportunity. Kiss, cuddle, whatever you want to do, just spend time with someone you love. It does not matter whether you stay home, go out, spend money, or make your gifts from scratch (those are usually the best ones anyway), we all just want some love.

Cook dinner, do the dishes, take him/her out, make a card, love coupons, rent a movie, go see a show...no matter what you do, big or small, just do it with someone you love. Take advantage of the opportunity in front of you. It is not about shiny red hearts, though they are nice, it is about the heart in your chest. Follow it.

Just because you are single is no reason to hate Valentine's Day either. I understand that with the whole hearts and love theme going around it is a little difficult for a single person to make it through the day, let alone enjoy it...but why? Valentine's Day is about love, not sex. You love your parents, friends, family, etc., so make sure they know it! Spend time with all of your closest loved ones because this is not "significant other day".

As I have explained, Valentine's Day goes both ways-commercial hype and romantic opportunity. Guys, if I were you, I would definitely take advantage of this romantic opportunity. If you are not usually a romantic type, it is a great way to surprise your loved one(s). Girls, I also urge you to take advantage of it because you must give love to receive love.  I want you to use your ROMANTIC OPPORTUNITY to your advantage and turn it into something great so that it ends up on the news and part of the whole COMMERCIAL HYPE.

Happy Valentine's Day!

New Hunting Social Network - Called Let’s Get Hunting, Is Launched

Visit http://socialnetwork.letsgethunting.com/ to start your free hunter’s profile.

Your Travel Buddy, a Michigan based internet travel provider introduces, Let’s Get Hunting, a social network for hunters. It’s like Facebook for hunters. You can help build a community of Hunters that you can discuss and share stories on Hunting.

Your Travel Buddy is a family of online travel booking services including flights, hotels, cruises, car rentals, vacation packages, all inclusive vacations and adventure travel. Your Travel Buddy Adventure Travel sells a host of adventure travel options to over 10,000 destinations including big game hunts from across the world.

Social networking has become all the rage over the last few years with the use many popular general topic social networking and status sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

When it comes to online social networking, websites are used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

“We decided on the hunting theme to fill a void. We believe there is a tremendous market for a hunting social network as there is an estimated 25 million hunters nationwide”, says Brent Vanderstelt, founder of Your Travel Buddy.

"The actual hunting population ranges from 23 million to 43.7 million", according to The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Related Recreation, which used 2001 data, much of it from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service... "Much false or misleading information on these numbers is often cited by critics of hunting. But it is the task of the USF&W Service to gather and keep track of the actual numbers, so it is their information our decisions must be governed by", states Brent.

However, the actual numbers of people becoming hunters is dropping each year. For every 100 hunters who no longer hunt due to an encroaching age, health issues, or passing away, on average only about 69 new hunters join their ranks.

“It’s our hope that by tapping into the popularity of social networking that we can increase the number of hunters nationally and make the sport what it once was. As we grow our membership base, we hope to add member benefits such as travel discounts, featured big game hunts, and other discounts on everyday purchases, such as hunting gear. Our goal is to add value to our members” says Brent.

Hunting and sporting goods manufactures, hunting guides and outfitters are also encouraged to join and create a free membership as this new hunting social network will provide a laser sharp marketing and/or distribution channel to will reduce or almost eliminate traditional advertising means.

With Let’s Get Hunting Social Network members will be able to share hunting photos, hunting videos, wild game recipes, reviews, hunting guides, forums, and online classifieds and most importantly, meet new hunting buddies.

Fellow MALE and FEMALE hunters or outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to join Let’s Get Hunting today.

The Moffit System - an excellent conservation tool that will allow anglers to release more fish unharmed

Are Hookless Trout Flies All The Rage? A new rig with hookless flies may help you catch more fish—and save more, too.

Hookless flies look and feel more realistic than traditional flies, making them much more appealing to fish. Anglers who have tried the system are reporting back that fish hang on to this more realistic fly longer, allowing them more time to detect the strike and hook the fish.

Natural drift

The hookless nature of Moffitt Flies not only make for a more realistic imitation but as importantly allow our flies to present a more natural drift – a critical factor in interesting the most selective feeders in your fly.

Fish multiple flies

Anglers agree that once they understand the concept of how to rig and fish the Moffitt System, the simplicity of the system is remarkable. Rigging or changing Moffitt hookless flies is fast and easy. And fishing with a tangle-free, multiple hookless fly rig maximizes their productive and all-too-coveted time on the water.

What does this mean for the angler?

More hookups, more fish, better fishing.

Rigging or changing Moffitt hookless flies is fast and easy. And fishing with a tangle- free, multiple hookless fly rig maximizes your productive fishing time on the water.

There are 3 incredibly simple steps to rigging the Moffitt System.  http://www.moffittangling.com/how-to-fish-it

Foul or Fair?

There’s been a lot of fuss on various Internet message boards to the effect that Moffitt’s rig is just a gimmicky way of snagging fish. I disagree.

Snagging, to me at least, means intentionally (or, rarely, accidentally) foul-hooking a fish that won’t take a lure, fly, or bait. In most cases it is illegal, as it should be. But Moffitt’s system won’t work at all unless a fish eats the hookless fly. The in-line circle hooks that Moffitt uses will slide across a fish’s body instead of foul-hooking it.

Regulatory

The Moffitt system is the first technological advance that shares the benefits between angler and fish- the first fishing tackle win-win.

The man behind the Moffitt Angling System is a retired environmental scientist, a passionate resource advocate and environmental activist, and a lifetime fly angler and fly tier. He built an environmental services company which offered engineering, studies and laboratory analysis both nationally and internationally, and after selling his company to an international consortium, he continued to manage it until retirement.

(Pat Moffitt says "It will change the way you fish")

Pat Moffit is currently working with State and Provincial regulatory agencies to incorporate language into regulations which clearly states the legality of the Moffitt System. This is a time consuming process and in the meantime it is recommended that you check with your local DNR officer if you have any concerns.

Note from the editor:  This is the greatest thing since sliced bread!  I encourage all of you to visit their website and learn more about this fly fishing alternative method.  http://www.moffittangling.com/

She's So Fly Muskie Lures To Benefit National Breast Cancer Foundation

I just received a few prototype custom lures for my "Fishing For A Cause" campaign to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) from Mike Mordas, owner of the Muskie Train EnterpriseThe Muskie Train Enterprise is one of my sponsors and makers of custom lures chosen by She's So Fly.

I was so excited to receive them that I could hardly wait to show everyone (so please excuse the rough photographs)!  Mike Mordas was very instramental in helping me with the custom muskie lure designs to ensure they will work to catch fish as well as retain the basic "She's So Fly" femine look I so desired.  Mike even help me come up with the name of my campaign "Fishing For A Cause".  Now, I just have to work on the packaging now and I will be ready for production, then sales with the proceeds to benefit the NBCF!

All Muskie Train Enterprise custom lures are hand crafted from cedar wood. The bodies are turned on the lathe, sealed and painted. Once the paint has cured an epoxy coating is applied to give the lure body a tough, durable finish. The screw eyes and diving lip are then installed. You will notice on my baits the oversized screw eyes. These eyes are 1 7/16" long to ensure a strong anchor into the bait. The larger eye allows for increased movement, which allows the lure to have a greater range of movement. Once the hooks and split rings have been attached to the lure, each one is hand tested.

Muskie Train Enterprise custom lure is featured on this month's cover of Muskie Hunter Magazine.

Each custom She's So Fly custom Muskie lure will retail for $20 each and will be available for purchase soon. Feel free to contact me for more information.

"MF Shad"

A five inch, hard pounding bait. This bait will easily hit 7 feet deep when casting and 12' deep(65' of 50lb braid.) when trolling. Made of the same high quality materials as the other baits but this one has a built in rattle.

(Lure A)

(Lure B)

"MX6 Straight"

The MX 6 baits are designed to cover a lot of water. Both the straight and jointed model have a side to side walk as they are being pulled through the water. This allows the fisherman to cover more water in one pass. The action is also irresistible to the fish. The bait has been in the water for two years and it worth its weight in gold. It is now ready for you too try. The MX stands for Minnow Express and the 6 designates the length of the lure.

Stay tuned for more custom lures to be shown soon from additional sponsors for Walleye, Trout, Salmon, Steelhead etc...

Free Fishing Day 2010 - In The United States

(Note from editor - article rev A - added Ohio Dates)

Enjoy free fishing days nationwide. Enjoy free fishing without having to purchase a license. Many states use the first weekend in June. Also, look into National Hunting and Fishing Day in late September. Be sure to check your specific state's regulations for details and further information.

Some states still require special stamps to fish for trout, salmon, etc. on free fishing days or restrict free fishing to freshwater or saltwater. Other states allow free fishing year-round to disabled veterans, senior citizens, children, etc. This is a great way to introduce a husband, wife, child, friend to fishing.
