Large Muskie Caught Unexpectedly!

Mike Mordas with 33" Muskie caught on a whim

Water Tested, Musky Approved!...Is the motto over at Muskie Train Enterprises.

Last week, Muskie Train Enterprises founder and my good friend, Mike Mordas, (on his birthday no less) ventured out to a local lake dock to test a few custom painted muskie lures for a client, which he often does, and got a big surprise on this day. While casting out each lure, one at a time, Mike felt a tug on one of lures...and to his surprise it was a 33" long Muskie! Mike then had to contact his client of this custom lure and explain what had happened. He called the client and said "I have good news and bad news...the good news is your lure is ready for shipping and the bad news is that your lure has a few scratches on it from landing a 33" muskie while testing it's performance before packaging...do you still want it?"...and the client replied, heck yes!...it has definitely been proven for performance - your motto is holds true....water tested and muskie approved!

Mike testing lures before shipping

After every lure is put together, it is water tested to make sure it runs correctly out of the box. We understand the frustration of buying a lure and having to spend fishing time trying to get the lure to run instead of fishing. To ensure that our products are ready to fish right out of the package, they all get tested, one of several ways. If the weather is good, we test them behind the boat at 4 mph. But living in Ohio that isn't always possible. We often cast them into a pond, river or off a local lake dock to tune them.

Over 25 years of fishing and woodworking experience led to the founding of Muskie Train Enterprises. You can be assured that each lure is built with the finest materials and the best craftsmanship anywhere in the world. When you purchase a Muskie Train you are not just buying a lure - you are buying a memory of a lifetime! Good Fishing.

Mike's Biography -

I am Mike Mordas. I started Muskie Train about eight years ago as a hobby and it turned into a great little business. Their are two people that build lures and manage the business; that is myself and my right hand man Trent Tesmer.

Here is the story in short. I have been an avid fisherman and woodworker for a long time. At sometime it dawned on me to combine my two passions.

I started playing around making lures. After a couple of tries I came up with the Mordas Minnow, a 6 inch jointed bait. Pictured below are the Mordas Minnow, Big Ed and the Super M. but these were all early baits

I made some Mordas Minnows for myself and they caught fish. I made some for my friends and they caught fish. So, I decided to try to make some lures to sell. I bought enough material to make 100 baits. I told myself that if I could sell a hundred baits I would make another batch. Well, that first year year I made 740 baits. Boy was i excited and Muskie Train has grown every year since then.

As Muskie Train was growing, my full time job was teaching woodworking at Hudson High School in Hudson, Ohio. One year, I had a class with a kid in by the name of Trent Tesmer. Trent and I hit it off because we both loved to fish.I have to tell you, that everyday I tried to teach to an objective and everyday Trent tried to get me off of the objective by talking fishing. Trent finished up his high school career and moved onto college. At the same time Muskie Train was growing and I needed some help. I ran into Trent at a fishing show, imagine that and asked him to come to work. The rest is history. Since Trent as joined the team, we have been steadily growing every year.

Muskie Train is my full time career. Events occur throughout your life that change the direction of the path you take. I am firm believer that things happen for a reason and that God will point in the direction that he wants you to go. You may not understand that direction at first but God has a bigger plan for you. Follow those directions and you will get to where you want to go. So come on board the Muskie Train and lets make some memories together. Forget about the pressures of life and enjoy the great outdoors. Hopefully, a Muskie Train lure will help you to create a memory of a lifetime!

Is Time More Valuable Than Money? - Tips on how to manage your time and enchance your quality of life

Most people look at their bank accounts with great attention and assess how much money they have to spend, to invest, and to give away… But, they don’t look at their time the same way, and end up wasting this incredibly valuable resource. In fact, time is much more valuable than money because you can use your time to make money, but you can’t use money to purchase more time.

Time is the great equalizer… Each day has only 24 hours - nobody has any more than anyone else. Everyone, from poets to presidents, fills those hours, one after the other, until they are all filled up. Every single minute is unique, and once gone, can never be regained.

People often say, “I don’t have the time to…” Fill in the blank with whatever you like: exercise, make dinner, write a book, start a company, run for political office, enjoy the outdoors by fishing or hunting. What makes these people think that they have less time than anyone else? Of course they don’t. We all have the same 24 hours in each day and make real decisions about how we spend them. If you really want to get in shape, then carve out time to exercise. If you want to write a book, then pick up a pen and do it. If you want to run for president, then get started. And, if you want to enjoy the outdoors and fish or hunt, then make a plan, act and do. It isn’t going to happen if you plan your day around your favorite TV shows or spend hours updating your Facebook page. These are entertaining distractions that eat up your irreplaceable time.

For instance, there is a woman named Audrey Carlson several years ago who was struggling to figure out how to spend time with her friends and take care of her growing family. She started a group called “Chop and Chat.” Every Sunday six friends got together to cook at a member’s home. Each member brought the ingredients to make a different recipe that was then split into six portions. Members took home six different main courses for the week. Chop and Chat was an inventive way for the women to cook together, socialize, and prepare meals for their families. Folks, you can apply this same concept for your interests.

There is an oft-quoted saying that "time is money." You can interpret this to mean that time is a valuable currency. In fact, each day another 24 hours is deposited into each of our “bank accounts.” We get a choice about how to spend these hours. We decide how much we spend right away, how much gets invested for the future, and how much we give away. The worst choice is to waste these hours by letting them slip away.

It is estimated that only 2% out of all outdoors women are active 50 to 100 days with in a year, and there are 20% that would like to participate and learn more about a particular outdoor sport if they simply had the time and were not intimidated to contact a group to learn more and find the time to do so…there are a lot of great programs and events out there for women such as the BOW program sponsored by the DNR “becoming an outdoor women” etc – that are dedicated to teaching women to appreciate the great outdoors, safety, etc.

Ladies if you are interested in outdoors activities, then take a moment and visit www.shessofly.com – you may just discover an event or learning clinic that you can fit in your schedule.

Take your passion and make it happen….don’t be a couch potato – make a plan, then act and do!

Information with out implementation is useless…learn, act and do!

I discovered some of these great tips from - http://creativityrulz.blogspot.com/2009/09/time-is-more-valuable-than-money.html

Factors In Deciding When And How To Go About Going On A Gold Coast Fishing Charter

By Kim Raymond

Are you contemplating a Gold Coast fishing charter but wondering when to go in terms of time of year and also possibly which day of the week?

In addition, are you wondering what kind of time frame you need to consider when making a booking for a Gold Coast fishing charter? Also do you have questions about assembling your own group or coming as an individual or with just a handful of friends?

On the question of what is the best time of year to book a Gold Coast fishing charter? There are several things to consider.

The first question to ponder before anything else is the question of your flexibility as to what time of the year you are able to go on a Gold Coast fishing charter? For many, they are restricted because of their job or business commitments. This makes decision making a whole lot easier. If you are desiring to bring a whole group of people that make up all the numbers on the charter boat, it is best to contact the charter boat operator as soon as possible. If you are just wanting to go and perhaps a handful of friends, bear in mind that a charter is usually not confirmed until a minimum number of paying customers have been confirmed. So to avoid disappointment, you are advised to keep in regular contact with the charter boat operator to check on numbers or alternative arrangements.

If weather conditions are a really key consideration for you when booking a Gold Coast fishing charter, rest assured that temperatures in the winter are mild compared to winters in the northern hemisphere.

The third consideration when deciding to book a Gold coast fishing charter is the question of what kind of fish you want to catch and consequently the size of fish that you want to target.

If you really want to go after the bigger pelagic (free swimming) fish then you are advised to book your Gold Coast fishing charter during the warmer months of the year, (November -early March) when fish like marlin, tuna, mahi mahi, mackerel etc are available. Incidentally, these fish are generally caught through trolling with an artificial lure off the back of the boat.

Alternatively, if you are content to go after smaller fish such as snapper, that are usually caught in larger quantities, then plan your Gold Coast fishing charter around the autumn, winter and spring months of the year. These are caught usually by bottom fishing off reefs.

When choosing a day of the week to book your Gold Coast fishing charter, demand peaks on the weekends. So if your holiday period is over or around Christmas, be sure to book months in advance to avoid disappointment. However during the off season (non holiday period), booking a few weeks in advance will usually suffice.

In terms of who comprises the customers on a Gold Coast fishing charter, some operators build charters recruiting individuals or small groups of two or three people. Other companies will tend to favour whole group bookings.

The final consideration in choosing when to book your Gold Coast fishing charter is to simply observe daily and weekly weather patterns and make your booking accordingly. Gold Coast fishing charter operators vary in their level of conservativeness in making the call whether or not to venture out when the weather is 'borderline'.

Information About Coastal Fishing In North Carolina

By Mike Relahs

The gorgeous state of North Carolina is lined by thousands of miles of breathtaking shoreline. It comes as no surprise that one of the most popular activities in the entire state, for locals and tourists alike, is fishing. Coastal fishing in North Carolina is the best way for tourists to get a good feel for the day-to-day life of real fisherman.

If this is your first time fishing, then you have started in the right place! North Carolina is full of experienced fisherman who rent out charter boats to beginners who want to head out on the water and try their hand at catching a big one. Even if a few members of the family are not so into fishing, many charter boats provide snacks and additional activities to keep everyone entertained.

Offshore, you will find an unbelievable abundance of fish from Marlin to Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna. The Gulf Stream runs just 40 miles off of the coast of North Carolina, bringing with it a huge variety of offshore species that will have even the most inexperienced fishers reeling in their lines.

Just think, you could start your day by heading out on a charter boat before sunrise, and end it by grilling up the fish you and your family caught during your inshore fishing trip. Inshore fishing is fun for beginners because the calm, protected waters make fishing a little bit easier and a little more fruitful as well. You can catch flounder, redfish, or even trout!

Try checking online for daily updates of the local waters in North Carolina. Knowing where certain types of fish are swimming on a day to day basis is a great way of saving time, and getting some real, rewarding fishing done.

Another way of increasing your chances of coming home with a winner is by taking an experienced fisherman along with you on your charter boat to help you with a few tips here and there. Having someone who knows the patterns fish follow, the types of bait they like, and the depth at which they swim, can greatly increase your probability of success.

Lastly, fishing is a sport that requires patience. You cannot head out on a boat with the same "go and get them" attitude that you take to the rugby field. Of course, once you feel a bite, you have really got to let them have it because fish can be strong and very stubborn.

For those who just want to spend a day with their family, coastal fishing in North Carolina, without the extravagance of heading out on a charter boat, pier fishing is the perfect activity right on the shore.

Dark Hendrickson Dry Flies Tied by Al Ritt For Northern Michigan's May Hatch

(Custom dry flies by Al Ritt)

(Al Ritt and She's So Fly editor, Sherri Russell)

During this year's Midwest Fly Fishing Show in Michigan, one of my purposes of attending this year was to meet this years show guest "fly tyer", Mr. Al Ritt in person. Al is a member of my pro staff fishing team for http://www.fishingforacause.com/. You see, Al resides in Colorado and I live in Michigan, so we have not had a chance to meet in person until this event. (read more about my meeting Al and that event here)

One great advantage to attending any fly fishing trade show is that you can personally talk to all the vendors and discover what type of fly fishing you may want to experience next...you can create your own experience in advance - for example at the Midwest Fly Fishin Expo, I reserved a fishing trip with an expert guide, Brent Borcherdt of http://www.riverscoutflyfishing.com/ to dry fly fish for brown trout on the AuSable river in Michigan this May.

(Brent, owner of River Scout Guide Service)

I then asked Al to use his expertise and design a few custom tied flies for this trip. I simply asked Al to talk to Brent (my dry fly fishing guide) during the show and find out what the hatch was going to be during my trip in May on the AuSable river - and then use his expertise and come up with a pattern that he felt would be effective in landing a monster brown trout.

I just received my dry flies in the mail from Al and they look marvelous!  I love them and I hope the brown trout share the same enthusiasm when I cast them out to entise them during my planned guide trip with Brent.

Here are photos of some dark hendricksons tied up by Al for my trip in May - which should be prime time for northern Michigan's hatch:

Al currently operates his own business, Al Ritt Flies. His focus is on fly fishing education through fly tying classes/lessons and guided fly fishing services.

More information about Al's guide services and classes are available on his web site, http://www.alrittflies.com/ . Al's fly designs are available from Montana Fly Company dealers, his own web site http://www.alrittflies.com/ and through http://www.myflies.com/ .  Friend him on Facebook.

Al does custom orders, just let him know qty, size and pattern!  Request your custom order at http://www.alrittflies.com/

Catfishing Rigs Drastically Improve Your Effectiveness As An Angler

CATFISHING HUMOR
By George Bowman

As you are reading up on catfishing and learning the ropes, one of the virtually important things you need to realize is how to set up catfishing rigs. Setting up a catfishing rig is similar to setting up a fishing line with bait, bobbers or sinkers; it depends on the type of catfish you are looking and the fishing area.

As an instance, you might choose deep catfish rigs to get those flatheads which generally feed at the bottom of the waters. This kind of rig commonly needs a sinker that is connected to the tip of the fishline. The hook is then tied with a palomar knot above the sinker at a length about 12-18 inches.

The idea behind this sort of catfishing rig is to pull the line to the bottom of the pond. With the sinker at the bottom of the water, your hook is stabilized at about 12-18 inches from the water bottom-- an area wherein catfishes would frequently inhabit.

The size of hook you utilize, and the weight of the sinker you utilize, should depend on what species of catfish you are going for, on what variety of water body you are fishing in, and on the weather and currents (if fishing on a river).

Fishing in shallow waters would necessitate another sort of catfishing rig. A shallow catfishing rig can be utilized this time with your hook located at the bottom of your line and a bobber at about 2 or 3 ft. atop your hook.

With a bobber, your fishline will be held so it will not lie on the bottom of the water body and your hook will be situated 12 to 18 inches from bottom where the bottom dweller catfishes are.

Always remember that in order to discover which catfishing rig types are efficient for different situations, trial and error works best.

After all, the soundest knowledge is the kind that you learn on your own by trial and error, and by experience.

A few examples of catfishing rigs from others:

Water - Use It Wisely

Every Drop Counts!

We live in a watery world, with the average American lifestyle fueled by nearly 2,000 gallons of H2O a day.

What may come as a surprise is that very little of that—only five percent—runs through toilets, taps, and garden hoses at home. Nearly 95 percent of your water footprint is hidden in the food you eat, energy you use, products you buy, and services you rely on.

Find out your water footprint, then pledge to dry it out, joining other nationalgeographic.com users who have already committed to saving thousands of gallons.

So far there have been 7,617 pledges and a total of 1,396,709 gallons of water pledged. The more we save, the more water we leave for healthy ecosystems and a sustainable future.

Catfishing Information To Help Land A Big Catch

By George Bowman

There is a wide variety of distinct species in the fish known as 'catfish.' If you've ever stepped in a river, lake or pond, you probably entered into the home of the catfish.

There are also a few catfish species that inhabit in saltwater. Most catfish are small in size, about ten to fifteen pounds, and are easily manageable.

However, some catfish can stack on the pounds as they grow older.

If you've seen the barbells of the catfish, that's their distinctive feature. They are essentially long tactile organs used for feeling around - much like a cat. These amazing organs bring in information about the environment, giving the animal excellent awarness.

Unlike cat whiskers, catfish barbells are equipped with taste buds that they use to catch fish in dark and cloudy waters when there is low visibility. This has an impact on what kind of bait to use. For more information on this, go to http://www.catfishingtipstacklebox.com.

As if the barbells weren't enough, the catfish also carries a cylindrical ray that shoots of its pectoral fin and dorsal fin. These are used for the catfish's defense, shooting out a protein when startled. The excrection causes a stinging sensation.

Some kids of catfish can carry a protein strong enough to in point of fact harm you. If you ever get stung, don't rule out the possibility that you may need to go to the hospital.

One of the most interesting and strange ways to catch catfish is to go noodling.

To noodle, check out the areas where catfish will most likely be found, under logs and rocks.

Often noodling should be done where the water level isn't really high. This is done with a group of spotters.

After spotting a likely catfish hiding place, the next step is to insert a stick into the hole to make sure it is a catfish Next, the noodler puts their hand into the hiding spot to lure the fish.

Naturally, the catfish will wonder what is going on, and attack the hand - ideally(?) biting it. When it bites, it holds on to the hand, allowing the noodler to pull it out.

Now the noodler can't take the fish off his hand by himself, so the spotters come by to pull the fish off, and place it in an accompanying boat. It is the spotters' job to help the noodler in case the fish is too heavy or the fish starts to pull the noodler into the water.

Will Fish for Fun Media Release

“Will fish for fun”, kids’ derby, is an open fishing derby for kids 14 and under, from anywhere/from any means. The purpose is to give them a connection with nature. This is a free derby with no restrictions, and is held at the Burlington Boathouse every year, on the saturday after Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 11th, this year. Fishing is limited to the Burlington waterfront area. No boats are allowed to fish. Parents are not allowed to fish, but are encouraged to coach their children. A crew of fishing coaches will be present, but they can be overwhelmed with so many youngsters. People interested in becoming coaches need to contact Pete Thayer at www.therocknvt@yahoo . Fishing starts 8:00 am, rain or shine; and continues until 11:30am.

Please go to the website http://willfishforfun.com, look for the REGISTRATION tab. Print it out and complete one form for each child that will attend. This information is needed for T-shirt and poles size. Registration is available through the website and must be brought with your child to the derby. Last year our line had 100 kids waiting in line for over an hour. Having the form completed when you arrive will get you through the line quicker.

In the 4 years since our start, we have given away over 600 fishing poles and hope to be able to buy and give away that many this year. We are doubling the bait order which is partly being donated by Hog Island Bait in Alburg, VT.. So that no one will go wormless, there will be 2,000 crawlers.

Another sponsor is Juniors Italian Restaurant, which is donating for the fourth year in a row, pizzas for our after fishing dockside picnic.

Hannaford Foods have been quite generous in the past also, donating Hot Dogs and such.

Bob and Paula Diaco, from Signarama, have donated considerable time, not only for Bob as a judge, but donated the beautiful banners and the fishing leader board.

We hope to have a representative from the VT Fish and Wildlife, to teach the kids laws protecting fish and wildlife. Bobber Bob will be there as well from Lake Champlain International. He will give out freebies to the kids.

The Ed Weed Hatchery in Grand Isle, has donated the use of a 300 gallon aquarium there at the Waterfront, so that the kids can see their fish once the fish are weighed in. Over 90% of the fish caught, are released unharmed, back into the lake for another days fishing.

We will be giving away 300 T-Shirts, on a first come-first serve basis. This year again we've chosen a bright color so that participants can be easily seen. After the derby, participants can wear it with pride.
We have over 30 people who have donated their time and energy to give the kids a good experience. We are greatful to all our volunteers.
There are 3 different age groups; ages 2-5years, ages 6-9 and ages10-14. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies handed out, along with Best Sportsperson, Smallest Fish, and Most Unusual Fish. Other prizes are dependent on donated funds, which are limited right now.
In 2007, the first year of the derby, 192 kids presented 413 fish to be weighed in, with even more caught. 130 poles and 200 T-Shirts were given out. 200 Hotdogs and 20 Pizzas were consumed.
In 2008, 515 kids presented 917 fish, with even more caught. 175 poles and 300 T-Shirts were passed out. 300 Hotdogs and 40 large pizzas were consumed.

In 2009 over 300 kids registered and weighed in over 843 fish. We handed out 125 fishing poles and 300 T-shirts to the kids, while they ate 50 large pizzas.
In 2010, we expect between 300 and 500 kids to show; we expect to hand out 150 poles and 300 T-Shirts; and an unknown number of Hotdogs and Pizzas.

For this year, 2011 even more!
